After robbers attack on five banks in Ondo State, citizens, bankers live in fear

Banks shut over robbery scare in Akure

After robbers attack on five banks in Ondo State, where over 20 people, including policemen were killed, citizens and bankers in the state now live in fear.

The fear was heightened after police disclosure that 19 of their AK47 rifles were carted away by the daredevils.

Yesterday, commercial banks and business outfits in Akure, Ondo State capital,  closed shops yesterday following a robbery scare at Alagbaka and other parts of the town.

The robbery scare, which started around midday, made many people who wanted to transact business to be stranded as customers who were already in the banks were asked to leave.

Many of the banks located at Alagbaka area of the city also prevented customers from entering the banks’ premises.

Similarly, bank officials who were attending to customers hurriedly closed for the day as the scare circulated by text message spread to different parts of the state. In fact, those who wanted to collect cash from the ATM machines were asked to leave as the banks said they could not guarantee their safety.
A security officer at one of the branches of an old generation bank in Alagbaka area, who preferred anonymity, said the banks in the area got the alert that armed robbers were in the city and planned to rob some new generation banks, hence the closure of the banks.
