Campaign of violence: IGP orders arrested suspects to be prosecuted

The Inspector General of Police, Mr. Suleiman Abba has ordered that several people, arrested in different states and locations should immediately be prosecuted for campaign violence.

It would be recalled that Abba, had earlier directed Zonal AIGs and State Commissioners of Police to crack down on Political thugs and miscreants perpetrating mayhem and causing an untold discomfort for supporters and actors of opposing political parties in the on-going political campaigns.
Some suspects have been arrested in connection with perpetration of violence during political campaigns at different locations contrary to section 227 of the 1999 constitution (as amended) and sections 94 and 95 of the Electoral Act.

The IGP has therefore ordered their immediate prosecution in the court of law no matter their status in the society.

While the IGP advices politicians to play the game by the rules, the Nigeria Police will not condone any act of hooliganism from any quarters.

Members of the public are assured of their safety always and equally enjoined to support the Police by reporting any untoward criminal act in their areas promptly at the nearest Police station.
