Woman collapses, dies after hearing of husband’s rumoured murder

A flying bullet on Tuesday hit a trader at the Sura Market area of Lagos Island after two factions of street urchins, otherwise known as area boys clashed over money given to them by a governorship aspirant.

Few minutes after sympathizers rushed the victim, Abiodun Taye to the nearest hospital, some of them did not wait to know if he survived.
Rather, they rushed to tell his wife that her husband had been shot and was already died. Immediately she heard the news, she slumped and died.
Eye witness said that the clash between the two factions; youths from Oke -Suna and Sura Market started on Sunday and spilled over to yesterday morning.
The witness said: “The trouble started over the sharing of money given to them by a governorship candidate who visited the area on Sunday.”
It was learnt that the hoodlums from Sura Market were not happy with the sharing formula of the money, which later led to a clash between the two factions.
On Tuesday, hoodlums from Oke-Suna area stormed the market, shooting sporadically. It was in the process of the gun fire, that Taye was shot.
A trader said: “We are tired of these clashes on Lagos Island. Whenever they start their trouble, they would loot shops and attack passers-by.”
Another trader in the market, who craves anonymity, said that after the victim was shot, some of his friends thought he had been killed; they went straight to his house to inform his wife.
The trader said: “The woman had been sick. When she was told her husband had been killed, she slumped immediately. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, but later pronounced dead by the doctor.”
At Oke-Suna Street, about 30 vehicles parked inside the mechanic village were vandalised by the hoodlums.
Mr. Ifarinu Muraina, the Automobile Mechanic Technicians Chairman said: “What happened to us in this mechanic village is a serious disaster. We are just in the beginning of the year and already some of the vehicles kept in our custody for repair had been damaged. We are law abiding technicians in this area; we have been in Oke-Suna for long. The Lagos State Government and Commissioner of Police, Kayode Aderanti should come to our aid and stop these clashes.”
Police spokesman, Mr. Kenneth Nwosu, confirmed the incident, explaining that mobile policemen from Lion Building and Adeniji Adele Police Station had been drafted to the scene.
He added: “Three people have been arrested in connection with the clash. We urged residents to go about their normal businesses as adequate security is guaranteed.”
