An Ifa Priest has
narrated how policemen in mufti, shattered his window in order to enter his
home in their quest to make arrest. Unfortunately, he was not even the person
they were hunting for.
The Ifa priest, Kayode
Opebiyi said that the policemen, from Ayinla Police Station, stormed his home,
shattered his window and damaged a lot of stuff in his sitting room. The
policemen allegedly ransacked his home, damaged wardrobes and stole N365, 400,
belonging to his wife.
When our correspondent
visited the home of Opebiyi, shard remains of shattered glasses littered the
floor. The whole place was in disorder.
Opebiyi said: “They first came in the morning and later in
the evening. I was in my house when they arrived. They were in
mufti and armed. I was inside my apartment with my wife. The door was locked.
But we didn’t hear anybody knocking. They behaved like thugs. They broke my
window to enter my apartment. I was
beaten up to a pulp my. My dog was barking at them. They gunned down the
dog. The killing of the dog saddened me because it was still breast feeding
four puppies. They collected the sum of N365, 400 belonging to my wife.”
According to Opebiyi, he
and other Ifa priests were supposed to have a meeting in his home that fateful
day.
“Before the policemen
came, my wife had already cooked. The
policemen took the soup, fried fish, meat and assorted
drinks to their station. Before they left for their station, they drank to
stupor and embarked on breaking bottles,” said Opebiyi.
He continued: “They
shot sporadically into the air, apparently to scare residents away. They
shot three people but the bullets went to different directions. They
took a Golf Car. The car is now parked at the police station now. We
learnt that the dog was taken to Dalemo where it was slaughtered
for pepper soup.”
Another Ifa Priest,
Fasina Fadare said he and his sister, a nursing mother was arrested and
detained by the policemen over a crime committed by another person.
The arrest of the Ifa
priest, Fasina Fadare and his sister, who was holding her little baby, caused a
commotion
at Akinrinade Street,
Ago Alagbede, Agbado, Ogun State.
According to Fasina
Fadare, the policemen, numbering over 20, arrived in two trucks on Thursday and
started terrorizing the residents.
Fadare said that he and
some other priests were at home around 9am, when the men arrived.
He said: “Five armed men
in mufti came to me, asking if I was one Alhaji. They mentioned the name of the
person. I don’t even know the person. I told them that I wasn’t the person. For
reasons I couldn’t understand, they arrested me. Not satisfied with that, they
also arrested my younger sister, Kemi Opebiyi, who is nursing mother a
baby. Kemi was handcuffed and dragged to Ayinla Police Station with her baby.
We were detained for two days before we were released on bail by our lawyer.”
Five priests were
arrested; Fasina Fadare, Kayode Opebiyi, Semiu Akinola, Tope Ife and Dare
Opebiyi.
The men said that they
later learnt that a complainant reported to the police that a man duped him of
N6million. When the complaint however saw the five priests, he said none of
them was the person that duped him.
Opebiyi said: “We were
detained for four days at the police station and later bailed by our lawyer.”
