Residents attempt to kill mad woman

A mad woman was almost lynched recently after residents of Bakare Jafojo Street, Iyana-Ipaja, Lagos State, thought she came to the area to kidnap a five-year-old boy.

The boy, Raphael Adetula was eating biscuit when the dirty woman approached him and begged to be given some biscuits.
Some youths who were watching her, thought she was a kidnapper, feigning madness and immediately pounced on her. But for the timely intervention of some law abiding citizens, the woman would have been beaten to death.
The incident occurred at about 8:40pm.
A resident, who identified herself as Mrs. Nasiru said that she noticed the woman in the street at about 4pm.
Nasiru added: “I saw her roaming about the street, but I knew she was a mad woman.”
One Chike, another resident said: “I and my friends saw her begging for biscuits from a little boy. The boy should be about five or six years old. She didn’t know that some youths were watching her. The woman approached the little boy and the youths shouted that the woman was a kidnapper.”
Raphael’s elder brother, Wale said: “My mother is a nurse. She was on afternoon duty. My father travelled to Ibadan. Raphael was hungry and started crying for food. One of our neighbours gave him N20 to go and buy biscuit. The woman begged Raphael for some biscuits, but people thought she was a kidnapper.”
The woman was beaten and dragged into a gutter at the other side of the road. It took the intervention of some landlords in the area before the woman was allowed to go. Some people also confirmed that she was a known mad woman.
