Culprits of rape in Kano State will henceforth face 14 year imprisonment without options of fine as minimum punishment, says the state’s Solicitor General, Barrister Mukthar Sani Daneji.
Speaking during Justice for All(J4A)
Conference in the state, Daneji noted that the punishment was increased because
of the rise in rape cases in Kano.
Daneji explained that many parents
now come forward to complain of their children being raped, leading to
government embarking on enlightenment campaign.
The barrister revealed that the
state has handled over 100 cases of rape and many suspects convicted.
The Country Director of the Justice
for All, Mr Bob Arnot said his organisation was working in collaboration with
Police and Judiciary to increase safety, security and justice reform aspect of
sexual gender violations.
He further noted that the J4A was
also assisting Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO) and Civil Society
Organisations (CSO) to establish referral centers for victims of HIV and other
sexual abuse problems.
Anort expressed worries on the
levity rape cases were being handled. He said that over 1000 rape cases were recorded,
but many didn’t get justice.
