Five die in Customs, smugglers’ gun duel

At least, five persons were yesterday feared killed when men of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and suspected smugglers engaged in a shootout at Oju-Ore area of Ota in Ado- Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State.

It was learnt that the gun duel, which lasted for about 45 minutes, also left some people injured. In the process, one of the vehicles conveying the Customs men allegedly knocked down an unidentified passer-by. The injured persons were said to have been rushed to the General Hospital, Ota.
Sources at the scene told our correspondent yesterday that the Customs operatives were on the trail of the smugglers from Owode area of Yewa South local Government before they later clashed at Oju-Ore. It was also learnt that the armed smugglers brought in three expensive vehicles, including a 2014 model Range Rover, from the Benin Republic but were intercepted at Ota.
