Family of nine dies in midnight fire

  • Two inmates killed in failed jailbreak

A fire which broke out yesterday at Ambursa in Kebbi State claimed the lives of nine members of the same family. This was as two people lost their lives yesterday in a jailbreak attempt at the Jalingo Main Prison in Taraba State.

It was learnt that one Mr Abubakari Danlambo stored fuel at home at Ambursa which caught fire about midnight. Danlambo was said to be working with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Mega Station on Arugungu Local Government Road. It was reported that the man was hiding petrol in his house to sell to black marketers.
Those who died were 30-year-old Aisha Abubakar, Zuwaira Abubakar, Zainab Tsara, Nana Hadiza (five), Misbahu Abubakari and Yunusa Abubakari (20). Others were three-yearold Sadiq Abubakar, two years old Usman Abubakari (two) and one-year-old Sani Abubakar. Sympathisers yesterday thronged the house while the Kebbi State Governor, Atiku Bagudu, expressed shock over the incident.
Meanwhile, at least two inmates were shot dead while several others sustained gunshot wounds in a failed jailbreak attempt at Jalingo Main Prison. The incident occurred in the early hours of the day when the inmates tried to break the door of the yard, shortly after they staged a protest inside the prison.
