Naval officer seeks N35m compensation, 14 years after injury

The Human Rights Monitoring Agenda (HURMA) has accused the Nigerian Navy of treating one of its officers shabbily after he was stabbed in the eye by hoodlums 14 years ago. 

Mr. Ozua Peter, a Warrant Officer, before he was retired in 2014, was said to have been stabbed in the eye in 2004 during a raid of an illegal refinery in Andoni Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
Addressing journalists yesterday at the National Secretariat of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) in Lagos, the HURMA National Coordinator, Comrade Isiak Buna, said the victim wanted the intervention of HURMA after his efforts to seek justice for more than a decade proved abortive.
According to Buna, the victim was recommended for foreign treatment in 2004 by a medical investigation board set up to probe his matter. He said: “This is a man who joined service in 1980 as an Ordinary Seaman and rose to become Warrant Officer through hard work and diligence.
