Fallen tree kills mother, daughter, mechanic

A popular mythical tree, known as Ukwuakpu, fell down and killed a woman, Ijeoma Ojobor, her daughter, Chibueze Ojobor, and an auto mechanic identified as Romanus Eze at Obollo-Afor in Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State.

The tree, said to be over 40 years old, was quite reverend in the area and stood at the Afor market where traders, especially from the northern part of country sell palm oil, brooms and other sorts of food items.
The tree located on Enugu- Markurdi Road and surrounded by shops, hosted traditional rites such as the take-off point of Akatakpa masquerades during festivals.
It, however, unexpectedly fell on Friday and killed the three while other people sustained injuries. The Chairman of Udenu Local Government Area, Amechi Nwodo, who confirmed the incident, said the officials of the local government had visited those injured that were receiving treatment at the hospital.
It was gathered that the tree fell down about 3pm during a heavy rainfall of Friday. The auto mechanic, Eze, was said to be taking his lunch in one of the shops around the tree when it fell on him. The man died instantly.
