Property and goods estimated to worth several millions of naira were
burnt yesterday when fire razed buildings and shops at Ikota Estate in
Eti-Osa Local Government Area of Lagos State.
The fire started around
3:30am from one of the shops around Ikota Second Gate, behind Oando
Filling Station. It took the intervention of firefighters from the Lagos
State Fire Service and emergency agencies to stop the fire from
spreading to other structures.
A provision shop owner, identified as Sule, said he lost N1 million
cash which he kept in the shop to the fire. Another victim, a
hairdresser, said she lost an undisclosed amount of money and all her
hairdressing equipment.
A witness blamed the fire on an upsurge in
electricity supply. The witness said the fire could have been prevented
if residents took the alarm raised concerning the fire seriously.
“People have lost millions of naira worth of property and goods to this
fire,” he added.
The Director, Lagos State Fire Service, Mr Rasaq Fadipe, said that
human error by one of the shop owners and another shop where gas was
stored aggravated the fire.
He said: “The fire involved some makeshift
structures made of plank, before it spread to houses and shops. It
started from one of the shops through an electric power surge.
